Safe Start Ignition Interlock FAQs

The Draeger Interlock XT is an ignition interlock device installed in automobiles to measure a driver's BAC before allowing the engine to start. The automobile cannot be started if driver's blood alcohol content (BAC) is above preset limit as defined by Iowa Secretary of State. 

While operating the automobile, the BAIID will prompt the driver to take random breath test (rolling test) and stores the information for monitoring authorities.

BAIID installation takes about one hour at one of our Iowa authorized service centers. At your appointment, you will be asked to complete some paperwork including the BAIID contract and lease agreement. At completion of BAIID installation, our technician will provide training on Draeger Interlock XT and a certificate of installation required to obtain your Iowa restricted driving permit.

Per Iowa secretary of state's office, ignition interlock devices must be calibrated every 30 or 60 days. BAIID recalibration takes about 5 minutes at one of our Iowa authorized service centers. During your appointment, data is download from your baiid device for Iowa monitoring authority and your next appointment is scheduled.

At completion of program, our technician will remove Draeger Interlock XT from your automobile. Breath alcohol ignition interlock device removal takes about 20 minutes. You will be provided with a certificate of completion required for reinstatement of your Iowa driver's license.

Our ignition interlock device works in extreme heat and cold weather. When the vehicle is not being used, the handset can be detached from the helix cable during extreme cold and heat. This prevents longer warm up and cool down times so the handset can quickly warm up to accept your breath sample.

Yes, the Draeger Interlock XT records the breath test results including date, time, BAC reading, engine stops and starts. The information is provided to Iowa Department of Transportation.
